THE APPOGGIATURA.
The appoggiatura is a grace note placed above or below a principal note. When it is placed above, it is always at the interval of either a tone or a semitone. When it is placed below the principal note it should always be at the intervalof a semitone. When the appoggiatura is |

There is also a double appoggiatura, which is composed of two grace notes,placed the first one degree below the principal note, and the second one degree above. |

THE GRUPPETTO OR TURN.
Is composed of three grace notes placed between or after a principal note.The turn istnarked
thus vs- A small sharp placed under some of the signs thus:
 indicates that the lowest of thethree grace notes is sharpened. Should the sharp be placed above the sign thus,:
 the uppergrace note must be sharpened; or in case of a sharp above and below the sign
 , the upper andlower grace notes must be sharpened. The same rule applies to flats, only that the grace notes must be depressed half a tone in that case.
